How To Live With Them, Or Live Without

“Influencer”– it’s a word we didn’t even know until a few years ago. Today, they are everywhere, like the word. In every industry and at all levels, there are “influencers.” So help us, God.

Most of us found them interesting when they first appeared, but now they are quickly fading in status. Do they have a place in our fossil-fueled culture, or should we ignore them?

The answer isn’t a yes or no, but rather, hmmm. Some influencers are very good and fair in their mission, while others truly are a waste of time. How to spot the ones to follow and who to drop is an individual task, and it is difficult to generalize.

We suggest leaving it up to the influencers themselves to prove their worth. If they deliver relevant and usable information or make you smile when watching their entertaining productions – great, then they may have passed your test. If they don’t – drop them and go work on your machine or spend time with family and friends.

What motivates influencers?
It is not an easy task being an influencer building a following. Of course, it all depends on your level of ambition and motivation. If the end goal is to make a living, you are looking at several years of hard work. If, on the other hand, your purpose is to spread relevant content to a dedicated group of followers, your task is a little easier. But in any event, succeeding as an influencer takes relevant knowledge and committed work.

For many, however, setting sail as an influencer is motivated by a combination of several factors. Earnings, social status, free stuff, passion for the topic, and the pleasure from generating the material. The case for some influencers is chasing fame and becoming stars. This is prevalent in the photo & video field, but sometimes spills over in other areas, like motorcycle riding. Building a studio, installing lighting, reversing your baseball cap, dressing the part… all the steps of becoming a YouTube star. Sure, image, good sound, and a nice picture make for a greater viewing experience, but too much isn’t always a good thing.

Playing the YouTube game requires frequent posts, and while you know a lot about motorcycles, at some point you run out of material to post. At that point, it would be better to take a break, instead of becoming “an expert” on fields where your expertise clearly is skating on thin ice.

Algorithms and Click Bait

Clearly, if money was taken out of the equation, most influencers would probably disappear in weeks or months. Just a few with valuable knowledge would remain, and some might even start a business. They would sell books, videos, and offer courses through their own businesses. They would pay taxes, and in extreme cases, generate work for more than themselves.

The way it works at the moment, the thousands of influencers do not run it as a business, but as a hobby with a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. We have read about a few that have arrived at the gold-filled pot, but at what price? In far too many cases, they resort to prostitution.

Earning a few bucks for gas and a burger, even this requires befriending the all-mighty algorithm. This is why almost all YouTube content includes the creator begging for “clicks”, “likes”, and to “watch this video to the end”. Even those with millions of followers do it, which ought to tell us something.

And, as the number of influencers grows, the requirements for scoring cash are getting tougher – say hello to clickbait – how to lure viewers into watching your uploads. It can be done with smart graphics, but easier and quite obvious to spot, is the 20-minute video of someone riding without drama through fields on a sunny day, with the bold caption: “I ALMOST DIED.” (No, you did not.)
Every time you should resist clicking on the video, because such headlines are designed to satisfy the starving algorithm.

Some influencers live up to every stereotype imaginable – but don´t let that fool you. Motorcycle riders are cool cats, but it is what they say and do that separates the cats from the posers.

Just Be Critical

By not playing dead, but using our best judgement, there´s a chance we can contribute to a slow change and be rewarded by better content in the future. This is also a hidden message to manufacturers, to be critical and help increase the standard of reviews and “unboxings”.

Social Media without product marketing is an impossible goal. All SoMe platforms are born in the US, where money is God. Brands sell products and make money on social media – and with printed magazines and glossy ads soon being extinct, social media is the only game in town.

What we ask for is a clear distinction between marketing and editorial content. Some things we can spot by being critical, but this does not apply to everything. The way we experience it now is everything mixed into a smoothie that doesn’t taste of neither foul nor fish.

How about if the influencers themselves take an initiative and start labeling their productions? That would mean a lot to everybody’s credibility.

Brynje of Norway

Det er ikke fordi vi mangler “outdoor” mærkevarer. De fleste er relativt nye markedsdrevne merker der lidt usikkert balancerer på skuldre af pionerer. Nykommernes begrundelse for berømmelse er skapt i en marketing brain storm, fremfor af praktisk erfaring fra den virkelige verden. Meget baseres på modeverdenens luner og bundlinjer i et Excell-ark. For Brynje of Norway er historien en lidt anden.

Maj 29, 1953 bliver New Zealanderen Edmund Hillary og sherpaen Tenzing Norgay de første på Mount Everest. Ekspeditionsleder John Hunt lancerede under sin planlægning radikale tanker om beklædningens vægt, komfort og hurtighed. Alle ekspeditionens deltagere blev udstyret med undertrøjer fra norske Brynje. Allerede dengang kunne Brynje kigge tilbage på mere end et halvt århundredes aktivitet.

Norsk – med tråde til Jylland

Jacob Jacobsen kom fra den største tekstilfamilie i Jylland. Han var den yngste i en børneflok på 20. I 1887 sejlede han til norske Larvik hvor han etablerede familie og en tekstilfabrik.

Den senere så berømte Brynje undertrøje blev udviklet i 20-erne af militærofficeren Henrik Brun, der var optaget af at udruste de nordiske soldater bedst muligt. Inspireret af vikingernes ringbrynje, strikket han selv utallige prototyper. Ideen var at skabe et stort sammenhængende luftlag mellem huden og uniformen, for at isolere og ventilere væk fugt.

Resten er – som man siger – historie. Den norskproducerede “helsetrøje” blev første valg for soldater, skovarbejdere, sportsudøvere og eventyrere verden over.

Enkelt og genialt

Brynje of Norway har integreret sit enkle men geniale koncept i de fleste af sine produkter. Indvendig på slidestærke og funktionsoptimerede jakker og trøjer, finder du det isolerende net. I hullerne fanges luft der opvarmes fra kroppens varme, samtidigt som det ventilerer og afleder fugt. Det er den mest effektive måde at isolere på, uden at skabe fugtighed. Effekten er påtagelig, både i vinterens kulde og på varme sommerdage.
I dagens kollektioner findes den klassiske trøje i flere varianter – der er forskel på materialet, størrelse på hullerne og net i kombination med andre materialer og membraner som for eksempel Windstopper. Is Fake Fur Really

Your Best Environmental Choice?

So you finally invested in that great jacket or anorak you’ve been ogling and googling for months. But, as you’ve probably already noticed, there’s something funny about the fur-looking-thing lining the hood. What animal is it? Chances are it´s not from an animal at all. It is most likely, fake fur.

Fake fur gained popularity in the 90´s when animal rights activists started shaming animal fur. In the following decade, outdoor clothing brands caved to activism and replaced their commonly used coyote fur with a fake substitute. Perfectly fine if you like the look and mostly plan to sport your garment walking high street, but if you plan to explore the outback in a blistering snow storm, disappointment awaits.

In the age of wokeism, veganism and fear of action oriented activists – we tend to take the easy way out on the matter of choosing animal fur.

But in fact, sticking to your guns (pun intended) on the matter is justified by solid arguments. Unless you are a devoted vegan, of course. In that case, our reasoning is always wrong.

What is Fake Fur

Fake fur is plastic. You know, the material made from coal and petroleum. Fake fur is typically fibers made from acrylic and polyester, glued in place. It is not biodegradable and ends up in nature as micro plastics. Fake fur shed harmful fibers every time it is used or when you clean it. We find it in the ocean, rivers and lakes, harmfull to the creatures that live there.

The Natural Alternative

Real fur – or let us just call it fur – comes from animals. It is 100 percent natural, high performing, durable and completely biodegradable. Fur insulates by trapping heat and filtering wind. If cared for properly it will outlast fake fur by a huge margin. If you buy from a responsible source, it is also sustainable.

Which is warmer

Fur is performing at a level that no plastic fur can match. With it´s natural undercoat, the real deal is warmer. Further more it sheds moisture and snow much more efficiently than the fake stuff. Snow and water is contained close to the surface, and won’t melt and freeze between layers. By staying fluff allowing for air to circulate, fur will not clog and deflate like fake fur will. It dries quickly if it gets wet.

These two images illustrate the point quite well. Fur shed snow, remaining lofty with all it´s insulating properties intact, while the fake fur retain all precipitation, collapsing into a wet and useless mess, eventually turning into a frozen collar.

Made from animals

Those who chose fake fur do so because they think it´s better for the environment. But unless you object to killing animals all together, utilizing fur is by far your best choice – both for performance and when it comes to environmental impact. If purchased from a responsible and legal source, all fur comes from animals legally hunted or trapped according to strict regulations, in both North America and Europe.

Donor animals are not under threat of distinction or unnecessary suffering. They are hunted in numbers that rather protect species from overpopulation. For most hunters and trappers, selling fur is an important source of income that has sustained families of small rural communities for generations.

Choices

The outdoor industry is booming as more people want to experience and explore. “No such things as bad weather”, they proclaim –“ just the wrong clothing.”

True, but proper gear can make a huge difference. Mostly a question of comfort, but it can also be the difference between safe and sorry.

In the matter of fake fur, we doubt that your very life will ever depend on it. But if you’re concerned about the environment and well being of creatures big and small, you may want to think again. Because the fake stuff doesn’t come without negative impact to us all.

For shear performance we take our advice from the Sámi, Inuit and explorers alike. We go natural.

Packages of freeze-dried meals can be found in almost any pannier, backpack, pantry or food depot these days. For adventure-types to stay sharp and energized, a regular intake of liquid and calories is a necessity.
Two Danish chefs, both famous for their culinary achievements, have introduced a new brand to the market. A brand with the purpose of lifting freeze-dried meals to a new level, when it comes to taste, sustainability and pure enjoyment.

A Taste of History

For centuries, man has ventured into the wilderness packing a variety of edible provisions. Animal proteins from hunting and fishing always played a big role through history. But this natural resource wasn´t always available. Preservation methods were salting, drying or smoking.

For the explorers of modern time, the likes of Shackleton, Scott, Nansen and Amundsen, provisions were typically dried and canned goods. Canned meals were a welcome evolutionary result of what was known as “portable soup” — a concoction boiled until gelatinous and then left to dry until hard. It does not sound particularly appetizing, does it. Well… it wasn’t.

The introduction of pemmican brought yet another advancement in convenient and packable energy. Invented by the indigenous people of North America, pemmican is a hardened block made from grated meat with fat and other “mystery” selections like dried fruit or berries, grains, etc. A nutritious bomb packing immense explosive power. A true life saver at the cost of enjoyment, widely adopted as a high energy food by Europeans involved in the fur trade and later by Arctic and Antarctic explorers.

Add Water

For the more modern adventurers of the hipster generation, enjoyment has finally come into the equation, along with convenience. With this, the market for “add hot water meals” has grown.

The process of developing decent freeze-dried meals is not a simple one, as evident from the many poor products on offer. Taste, texture and nutritional value must all be kept within the acceptable, while keeping the bean counters happy.

Chef’s Table

Chefs Nikolaj Kirk and Mikkel Maarbjerg are no strangers to identifying great taste. Both with extensive experience from Michelin-rated kitchens and bushcraft style meal preparation in the jungle, they know how to bring maximum taste from minimal resources in the quest to bring smiles to tired faces.

Trail Organic Food is a new selection of freeze-dried meals, offered by Kirk and Maarbjerg, with seven different varieties available. Two breakfast meals and five more lunch or dinner oriented courses. All made from selected organic ingredients, as indicated by the brand label. Two of the meals — the Pasta Ratatouille and an Indian Daal with rice, are vegan.

Our favorite – Chicken in a creamy mushroom sauce, with pearl barley and bright green peas. Simply put – One Great Meal.

The Proof in The Pudding

The Pasta Bolognese has real penne pasta, not the measly little pasta pieces typically spotted from the competition. And meat content aren’t uniform, machine cut squares.

Our favorite, the Creamy Chicken with Pearl Barley and green peas, packs a taste and quality that should be the bench mark of the industry. A real treat.

’twas a Dark and Stormy Night

A few years back, Nikolaj Kirk and I spent a couple of nights in a tent, during a raging winter storm in Jotunheimen, Norway. Not surprising with one chef and a foodie pent up in a small space, much of the conversation circled around food.

The morning after the storm, and a return of the sun. A dried leg of lamb, a bottle of Cognac and several freeze-dried meals kept us happy.

We were not starving by any means, but started wondering why the freeze-dried meals we prepared had so little color and lack of texture. A hot meal in a tent during a storm — however tasty and nourishing — as long as it is greyish brown in color and with the texture of baby food, is missing key elements. We agreed on that, back then.

In the process of developing Trail, Nikolaj and Mikkel have succeeded in bringing these missing factors back into play. And trust me — it makes a big difference.

Choosing Your Adventure Travel Vehicle

Choosing a vehicle for adventure touring is a very personal one with plenty of considerations. Some are practical, some technical and some deeply rooted and personal.

Image enters into it as well. Do you have a secret desirer to appear macho or is a green profile more important. Are you traveling alone or with your family.

Size matter

RVs are becoming more popular, but most overlanders searching for a peace and quiet in rural areas opt for a smaller package. And honestly, the large RVs do not belong on the narrow gravel roads we usually travel along.

For that reason we count them out in this overview.

For many, big wheels and a matching rumble from a V-engine is a must. This, of course, translate into high running cost. On the other hand, large trucks and vans are sometimes found in the bargain department if you are looking for something used.

Modern SUVs have taken over the slot previously held by slightly more off-road oriented vehicles. Unfortunately, many of the cars in this category is designed more for looks than action. Plastic details, chrome, wide low profile tires and lack of all wheel drive generally lower the functionality off pavement. And overlanding is all about leaving pavement behind, right?

On All Four

All wheel- or four wheel drive greatly adds to an adventure travel vehicles usability. Most cars, vans and trucks sporting this feature also have extra ground clearance and beefier suspension. Some even have reduction gearboxes and differential locks of some sorts.

Taking your vehicle off-road isn’t an option in any part of Scandinavia – no matter if we are talking public or private land. This very strict policy makes a lot of sense. Protection the natural environment and leaving no trace is the way to go for all adventurers, even if our vehicles are capable of transversing rocks and mud. With that said, all wheel drive will get you unstuck and out of trouble in many situations and that is important when you are an hours or two away from a good neighbor with a John Deere. It is a feature we recommend.

All in the box. A square van is great for packing gear. Fridge-freezer, mountainbike, portable firepit, dutch oven, pots & pans, hammock kit, tools, gas stove, personal gear, photo & video gear. Rooftop tent. Ready to go.

Room for Gear

Cargo capacity is all important if you plan extended trips. Not only do you need room for your personal gear, you will also need room for food, water, cooking and other camping gear. You’ll be surprised how much you can cram into a smaller vehicle, but constantly unpacking all your stuff in order to access that coffee brewer at the bottom, quickly turns into a real pain in the ass. Organizing your gear in cases or boxes is always a good plan.

Determining the sweet spot between the size vehicle and the volume of your gear can make a big difference.

If you travel with bicycles, kayaks or a canoe you’re faced with even more decisions. Do you prioritize carrying the load inside your vehicle or on the roof or an extra rear rack. Your roof is prime real estate and can be used for load bars, a rack or even a roof tent. Adding weight to your vehicle’s highest point does not add to it´s drivability, but most adventure travel vehicles are not outfitted for high speed chases, so pay attention to your vehicles load maximums and use your rooftop sensibly. Anything you carry inside your car will benefit from higher safety against theft and will invariably arrive cleaner and dryer.

Extras

Make a dry run before you embark on your first adventure with a new vehicle . Spend a weekend in your driveway to explore the best ways to pack. Make sure your electrical system is in good shape. Running a refrigerator, charging mobiles, tablets, cameras, drones and items of your digital life, takes electrical horsepower. Be prepared for this.

Make sure to put all important items at the top of your assembly. First aid kit, coffee making gear, travel and insurance documents, etc.

Get Out!

Survival by Micro Adventure

It´s been a couple of years out of the ordinary. Limited travel or no travel at all. Restrictions on how people meet and greet. Miserable across the board. Outdoor adventure enthusiasts have had more options that most for sure. Many of us have survived by micro adventure.

It doesn´t take much but imagination. Adventure comes in many sizes and it is all up to you to turn everyday moments into life affirming happenings. For our small team it most often starts with packing a small bag and heading out – on foot, on a pedal- or engine-powered bike, in a kayak or canoe. For an overnighter always with a Draumr hammock – our favorite and preferred way of sleeping out.
We bring food and means to prepare it. A good knife and a cup, or a pot and a pan. Keeping it simple is key.

Chose a spot you know if you have no time to explore, invite a friend if you prefer not to fly solo. Don´t under estimate the experience of experience it in your own company. Learning to be out by yourself is a valuable experience. Try it some time.

Life may not return to “normal” any time soon, so take comfort in nature and any chance to sit down in a forest, leaning up against a tree. Look up at the sky and appreciate the moment.

Curious about Charity Rallies – Just Do It!

Drive it!

Entering a charity rally is great fun and we recommend it highly! There are several to chose from and even though they do resemble the infamous Cannonball Run, they are everything but. No, you don´t need an exotic supercar and a platinum credit card – most charity rallies impose much more social and responsible restrictions on your wheels. Speaking of wheels – you can enter your motorcycle, your multi axle truck, your car on four wheels or a three wheel Robin Reliant, if you can find one. We looked and could not – so we found a fine specimen Citroen 2CV6 and entered the Baltic Circle Rally, 2018 edition.

7500 km, 10 countries – in 16 days and 29 horsepower

As stated by the organizer, German Superlative Adventure Club, your vehicle must be at least 20 years old. Campers, RVs and caravans are not allowed, so bring your hammock, tent or sleep in the back of your hears or ambulance, if you can find one. The idea behind a charity event is…. you pick a charity and make the adventure a vehicle for raising money for your charity. The organizer usually also has a charity that gets part of your entry fee. For our particular rally, the entry ticket was €1000 for vehicle and 2 person crew. We picked Danish Hospital Clowns as our charity.

Rain and Thunder

After a flying start from Hamburg we reached the south coast of Sweden at the end of Day 1. A mere 20 minutes into Day 2 the rain started and stayed with us for a week, with few breaks in the cloud cover. Rally route consist of certain check point, all with some type of challenge. How you get from checkpoint to checkpoint is entirely up to you. There is no timed stages and the general rule is no GPS allowed, and no freeways – only two lane country roads allowed.
Our fine French race car was well behaved, rain or shine, following a route up through Sweden, eventually crossing over to Norway just north of Trondheim. We teamed up with another Danish crew driving a Mercedes Geländerwagen – most fortunately equipped with the car maker´s most anemic diesel engine. No match for our 29 horsepower, 2 cylinder air cooled power plant. A race of two turtles.

Cool Camping

Except for a couple of nights in the rain, we wild camped in the most beautiful spots. The young Mercedes crew slept in back of their fine German product – we slept in our Amok hammocks. Passing the arctic circle and Lofoten, we headed for Nordcap – for reasons I cannot grasp: The most famous selfie spot for northern travellers. From that milestone we continued along the northern most Norway coast to the Finnish border. After a final gas station waffle with goat cheese, we entered Finland in a stench of unleaded fuel…. 2CV, don´t fail us now.
